Goodbye Squares!

As a leading digital marketing agency specialising in social media content creation. we always keep our finger on the pulse for any upcoming changes across the social media channels that may impact our clients. Today we’re bringing you some Instagram marketing news, shared in the latest Q&A by Instagram Chief Adam Mosseri. In summary, it could be ‘goodbye’ to the square profile grid format we’ve grown accustomed to!

Instagram is currently testing a new vertical grid display on user profiles – you might have noticed that some some Instagram profiles already have this updated vertical grid format, which better aligns with videos (it pretty much reflects the format of the Reels grid). Mosseri said:

“We’re actually testing a vertical grid, for those of you who haven’t seen it yet, for your profile, instead of squares. Now, squares are from way back in the day when you could only upload square photos to Instagram.”

So what does this mean for content creators? Well, it’s likely that this change would impact your historic posts. If, like many of creators, you’ve precisely planned out your profile grid around squares, you should prepare for those squares to change in to rectangles in the very near future! Mosseri himself acknowledged that this change may be annoying for those who have spent a lot of time “curating and making sure everything lines up” but added that “The vast majority of what is uploaded to Instagram today is vertical. It’s either 4 by 3 in a photo or 9 by 16 in a video, and cropping it down to square is pretty brutal.”

We’re sure that this news will be music to the ears of video creators who will save a huge amount of time and effort from cropping reels to fit into the original square format!

In case you missed it, here’s a transcription of Mosseri’s story:

“We’re actually testing a vertical grid, for those of you who haven’t seen it yet, for your profile, instead of squares. Now, squares are from way back in the day when you can only upload square photos to Instagram. I know this can be annoying for some of you who really spent a lot of time curating and making sure everything lines up, but I would really like to do better by the content today. The vast majority of what is uploaded to Instagram today is vertical. It’s either 4 by 3 in a photo or 9 by 16 in a video, and cropping it down to square is pretty brutal. So, I’m hoping we can figure out a way to manage this transition.”
